La nécropole orientale de Bayt Ras, l’ancienne Capitolias de la Décapole, a révélé en 2016 un tombeau peint exceptionnel qui marque un tournant dans les recherches iconographiques. Cette découverte jordanienne a bénéficié dès 2017 de la mise en place d’un consortium international sous l’égide du Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DoA).

La contribution française a consisté à documenter les peintures en contexte. L’objectif en 2023 est de rendre un manuscrit dans le cadre d’un accord de publication entre l’American Center of Research (ACOR- SCHEP, Sustainable Cultural Heritage through Engagement of Local Communities Project, Amman) et l’Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo, Beyrouth).

Une frise murale (dix-sept mètres de longueur sur plus d’un mètre de hauteur) composée d’une centaine de scènes (dont une soixantaine avec une inscription) sera mise en valeur, ainsi qu’une composition zodiacale au plafond, entourée de très grandes Néréides et monstres marins. La conservation restauration (ISCR), la géophysique (ISPRA), l’épigraphie (CNRS), le contexte architectural et la fouille (Ifpo) seront abordés, ainsi que d’autres aspects par l’équipe archéologique jordanienne (SCHEP, DoA).
