Decorative Floors in Public Context : Mosaics from the Macellum and Baths in Perge (Pamphylia), Turkey

Perge was among the foremost cities of Pamphylia (southern Turkey) and enjoyed great prosperity during the Roman Imperial and Late Antique periods. Especially during the Pax Romana, numerous public buildings were constructed and lavishly decorated.

 The paper will examine the opus tessellatum floors decorating the southern bath complex and the macellum. Based on archaeological evidence as well as material and stylistic characteristics, these floors have been dated to the Roman Imperial period (1^st and 2^nd c. A.D.) and the Late Antique period (4^th and 5^th c. A.D.). Stylistic analyses have also made it possible to identify eight different mosaic workshops with their characteristics ranging from the Italic Style to the Rainbow Style. The presence of both eastern and western Mediterranean influences in Perge indicates the intermediary position of the city in the diffusion of the decorative repertoire of floor mosaics in antiquity.
