How natural is nature? Palaeoecological investigations to the formation of cultural landscapes
Modern landscapes are the product of natural processes and human land-use. Many currently protected biotopes and nature reserves have a history of human influence and some owe their existence to particular land-use practice. Only a palaeoecological perspective can shed light on the origin and evolution of supposedly natural ecosystems and provide a guideline for nature conservation under current climate change.
